Type As tympanograms, with normal middle ear pressure (Pres = -20) but reduced compliance (Comp = 0.2) can represent normal middle ear function, or a stiff middle ear system suggestive of some form of ossicular fixation (otosclerosis or tympanosclerosis affecting the ossicles) with normal Eustachian tube function. The decibel scale is logarithmic (based on a factor of 10): An increase of 10 dB means a 10-fold increase in sound intensity. An increase of 20 dB means the sound is 100-fold more intense. Standard audiograms test between 0 and 110dB. For reference, normal conversation is around 60 dB. By 6 months of age a normal child will turn to look for a faint sound, and this response can be reinforced by such stimuli as an animated toy on the correctly localized speaker.
